What is the Resource Base?

The Resource Base is for students with cognition and Learning needs and whose academic or personal development is currently significantly behind their chronological age. We work with students with a range of special education needs and our remit is ‘Cognition and Learning’ needs. We work closely with a range of outside professionals when required such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists etc. We also have a small sensory space to support those students with sensory needs.

The Base has 25 places across three classroom spaces and has the additional benefit of having its own outside space, sensory space and practical space for art and design technology. 

The aim of the Resource Base is for students to achieve appropriate academic qualifications and to develop life skills necessary to become a member of society. Class sizes are small with around 5 students in each class and there is a high level of additional adult support in each class depending on the cohorts needs. For a proportion of their time the students will attend mainstream lessons including arts, sciences and core learning. Children in KS4 will take an appropriate GCSE pathway and access specialist teachers within the mainstream classes. 

The Resource Base students are very much part of the wider school taking part in whole school activities such as the Tutor Time Reading Programme, assemblies, extra-curricular activities, trip and visits and the rewards system and some students will access the subject specific classrooms and mainstream teaching. Much of the rest of the school day the students are taught by one of the two main class teacher who specialises in teaching students with special educational needs. All students will access mainstream lessons with the goal of them being able to attend independently by the time they approach GCSE. We also run interventions in small groups usually led by the Teaching Assistants which are planned based on the cohorts needs.

The curriculum where possible mirrors that of the mainstream so that all children have the same access of content and subjects as mainstream students. In addition the Resource Base students will be able to access to many of the interventions and lesson of their peer group nurture group.
