PE & Games

Physical Education is the cornerstone of everything outstanding at Clarendon.

We proudly provide a broad and holistic curriculum designed to encourage active participation in physical activity. Our lessons interleave with that of PSHE and Science in order to ensure that all learning is further embedded and students make progress in both the practical side of PE as well as its theoretical underpinning.

Here at Clarendon we want to give your child the opportunity to enjoy and develop in a range of different sports and activities. We fully understand that students all have different needs and preferences, therefore we offer a compulsory Core PE programme for all students. We feel this will allow all students to thrive and enjoy Physical Education.

We have a ‘no note’ policy in PE which means that students must bring in a note to explain that there is a medical issue which may prevent them from taking part in the physical aspect of the lesson but they still need to get changed into their PE kit unless this is not possible due to the injury, GP guidance or teacher discretion. All students are to get changed and those who are not able to participate in the physical aspect of the lesson will adopt an alternative role such as referee or coach.

As a school we are very fortunate to have access to Trowbridge sports centre as it allows us to offer a range of water based activities such as conventional swimming lessons as well as personal survival. Swimming is a skill we feel is crucial to all young people especially when living and socialising in a town with rivers and lakes in close proximity, this is for their safety and confidence within the water. We do appreciate that swimming can pose challenges to young people, especially when it comes to water confidence and self-image. In order to ensure that our students can overcome these challenges we as a department are happy for your child to wear a fitted t-shirt whilst swimming and will ensure that we reduce time by the side of the pool. Our Personal Survival lessons, that are exclusively available to Year 9 students,  will already require students to wear a top and tracksuit bottoms for all lessons to aid with the training. The personal survival sessions will also be single gender lessons as requested by the students.

We run an extensive extra-curricular programme which offers a number of opportunities for all our students to engage in activities at lunch and after school. Please see the current extra-curricular list on the school website or alternatively follow us on Instagram at clarendon_pe. All the clubs are free and your son/daughter just needs to turn up.

For all PE lessons students are required to change into their Clarendon PE kit. If they forget their PE kit they will be required to borrow kit.

Expectations for lessons:

  • Jewellery is not permitted except medical bracelets. If a student has newly pierced ears or a nose piercing they are responsible for bringing tape to cover them for safety reasons until they are able to be removed.
